El otro
día estuve viendo una entrevista de los años 70 a Octavio Paz en el programa “A
fondo”. No era la primera vez que lo hacía. Ya la usé como fuente hace unos
años para un trabajo que hice sobre El
laberinto de la soledad; recordaba vagamente algunos comentarios que hizo
durante la entrevista que podían ser útiles para mi tesis y decidí verla de
nuevo.
Lo
primero que me llamó la atención fue el programa en sí. Me cruzó la mente un
breve pensamiento comparando lo que estaba viendo con la telebasura constante
que invade la televisión española de hoy. Estoy segura de que si le enseñamos
una foto de Octavio Paz y otra de Jorge Javier Vázquez a la gente, la inmensa
mayoría no tendría ni idea de quién es el primero… Pero bueno, dejando la
tristeza cultural aparte, hubo un par de cosas que Paz dijo que me dejaron
pensando y que, de hecho, han causado que escriba esta entrada de blog.
La
primera era que el pueblo no debía equivocarse pensando que los sistemas
políticos van a terminar con los problemas, ya estemos hablando de gobiernos
democráticos o no, de derechas, o de izquierdas. Los problemas que la gente
quiere solucionados tienen, por lo general, una base social, y es por tanto en
la esfera social donde deben empezar a solucionarse. Puede parecer básico, pero
creo que es una idea muy acertada, ya que muchos pecan de esperar que venga
alguien para solucionarles la papeleta y quitarse el muerto de encima. Más de
uno dirá “pero si es la política la que ha creado la situación…”, y yo creo que
ahí es donde radica uno de nuestros problemas básicos. Los españoles somos muy
pueriles en ese sentido, muy de mirar alrededor cuando nos conviene y de
señalar con el dedo, muy de “si fulano lo hace, ¿por qué no lo voy a hacer
yo?”, muy de sentirnos como unos primos si no hacemos lo que la mayoría. ¿Sirve
de algo culpar a unos o a otros? De acuerdo, digamos que todos los problemas
del país son a causa del gobierno. ¿Y? ¿Soluciona algo saber que es así? ¿Qué
hacemos: nos chivamos a su madre? No, el cambio empieza abajo, empieza con las
personas. Y no hablo sólo de manifestaciones y pancartas, hablo de acción. El
problema no es la política, son los políticos. El gobierno no está corrupto,
sino las personas que lo forman. Derecha o izquierda da igual cuando la raíz de
la enfermedad está en la misma base: las personas. No necesitamos buenos
gobiernos, no necesitamos mejores sistemas. Lo que necesitamos son mejores
personas, honestas, con valores, con sentido de la moral.
Eso me
lleva al segundo punto de Paz, que me pareció extremadamente interesante. Decía
el Nobel mexicano que lo que echa en falta la cultura hispánica (tanto de la
península como de ultramar) es “un buen siglo XVIII”. Mencionaba cómo la
Ilustración no caló en nuestra cultura, cómo nosotros no tenemos figuras a la
altura de Rousseau, Montesquieu, Hobbes, Locke, y muchos otros. La Ilustración
dio a Europa el pensamiento crítico, una serie de valores como los derechos
individuales y la soberanía social, el bien común, etc. Esos ideales no se
llegaron a inculcar en la sociedad española, que yo siempre he considerado que
está más de un siglo por detrás de países como Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania…
Intentar compararnos y equipararnos, como hacemos, con el resto de Europa es
como comparar y equiparar un pueblo del salvaje oeste americano con la Nueva
York contemporánea. No hay color… Necesitamos tener nuestra propia Ilustración,
y puede que ahora sea el momento.
Ya se
ha dicho muchas veces que la generación de jóvenes españoles de hoy en día es
la mejor preparada de la historia. Esos jóvenes podrían (¿o puedo decir
podríamos?) ser la solución verdadera a tanto problema. Sin embargo, la
estupidez y la corrupción de la mayoría prevalecen y los más preparados no
encuentran la forma de ayudar y de impulsar los cambios necesarios para las
mejoras. Ante esto, sólo queda lo que ya ha ocurrido muchas veces en la
historia, como durante la mal llamada “Reconquista”, la dictadura de Franco, la
segunda guerra mundial… hablo de la terrible fuga de cerebros. Como si esta situación de
por sí no fuera triste, debemos aguantar estoicamente tener que escuchar y leer
declaraciones como la que ya mencioné en una entrada anterior de Marina del
Corral diciendo que los jóvenes se van por “espíritu de aventura” o la más
reciente del ministro Wert afirmando que la fuga de cerebros “no es algo
necesariamente negativo”. Ante palabras como éstas, una ya no sabe si reír o
llorar. Son sencillamente la prueba de que es cierto eso que dicen de que “la
inteligencia humana tiene sus límites, la estupidez no”.

"The corruption of the soul is more shameful that the corruption of the body"
The other day I was watching an interview from the 70s to Octavio
Paz in the show “A fondo.” It was not the first time I had watched it. I had
already used it as a resource a few years ago for a paper I wrote on The Labyrinth of Solitude; I vaguely
remembered some comments he made during the interview that could be useful for
my dissertation, so I decided to watch it again.
The first thing I noticed was the program itself. A brief
thought crossed my mind, comparing what I was seeing with the trash that
constantly fills Spanish television today. I'm sure that if we show a picture
of Octavio Paz and another one of Jorge Javier Vazquez to people, the vast
majority would have no idea of who is the former... Well, leaving aside the sad
situation of culture, there were a couple of things that Paz said that left me
thinking and that, in fact, have made me write this blog entry.
The first one was that people should not make the mistake of
thinking that political systems are going to end up problems, whether we are
talking about democratic or non-democratic governments, liberal and conservative. The problems
that people want to have solved usually have a social basis, and it is
therefore in the social sphere where they should begin to be solved. It may sound simple, but I think it's a very good idea, as many people make the mistake of waiting
for someone to fix their problems and thus get rid of them. Some will say
"but if it is politics that has created the problematic situation..." and I
think that's one of our basic issues. Spanish people are very childish in that
sense, very prone to looking around when it's convenient and pointing fingers, very likely to hold thoughts such as "if so and so did it, why not me?", we tend to feel
silly if we don’t do what most people do. Does it help at all to blame each
other? Okay, let's say that every single problem in our country is caused by the
government. So? Does it solve anything to know that? What should we do: tell
the government’s mom? No, change must start from the bottom, it starts with people.
And I’m not only talking about demonstrations and banners, I mean action. The
problem is not politics, it’s politicians. The government is not corrupt,
people in the government are. Right or left does not matter when the root of
the disease is on the very basis: people. We don’t need good governments, we
don’t need better systems. What we need is better people, people that are honest,
that have values, that have a sense of morality.
That brings me to Paz's second point, which I found
extremely interesting. The Mexican Nobel laureate said that what Hispanic culture (both in the mainland and overseas) is missing is "a
good 18th century." He mentioned how the Enlightenment didn’t leave
a mark on our culture, since we had no figures at the height of Rousseau,
Montesquieu, Hobbes, Locke, and many others. The Enlightenment gave Europe
critical thinking, a set of values such as individual rights and social
sovereignty, the idea of the common good, etc. Those ideals were never instilled
in Spanish society, which I have always considered to be more than a century
behind countries like France, England, Germany... Trying to compare with and match the rest of Europe, as we do, is like comparing and matching a town from
the wild West with contemporary New York. Impossible... We need to have
our own Enlightenment, and now might be the time for it.
It has been said many times that this generation of young
Spaniards is the best prepared one in our history. These young people might be
the real solution to so many problems. However, the stupidity and corruption of
the majority prevails, and those who are best prepared can’t find a way to help
and promote the necessary changes for improvement. For this reason, the only option left is one that has already happened many times in history: during the so-called
"Reconquest," the Franco dictatorship, the Second World War... I’m
talking about the terrible brain drain. As if this situation was not sad in
itself, we must endure stoically having to hear and read statements like the
one I mentioned in a previous post of Marina del Corral saying that young
people leave Spain because of their "spirit of adventure" and the
more recent one by Secretary Wert stating that the Spanish brain drain "is
not necessarily a negative thing." Listening to such words, one does not
know whether to laugh or cry. They are simply the proof that it is true what
they say: "human intelligence has limits, stupidity does not."
